Serves: 4 to 5


  • Mathi/ Sardine: 10 nos
  • Shallots: 6
  • Ginger: 1 small piece
  • Garlic: 5 to 6
  • Redchilli powder: 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder: 1 tsp
  • Blackpepper powder: 2 tsp
  • Salt:1 tsp
  • Coconut oil: 4 and tbsp
  • Curry leaves: few sprigs


  • Clean the sardines, slit at the centre on both sides.
  • Crush together ginger,garlic and shallots.
  • Mix together chilli powder, pepper powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt with little water.
  • Marinate the fish with masala paste and crushed ginger,garlic and shallots.
  • Refrigerate for 30 mins .
  • Heat oil in a pan, add the fish pieces, sprinkle some curry leaves and shallow fry on medium to low flame till both sides turn crisp and brown.
